ASTM E1290 Standard Test Method for Measuring Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) Fracture Toughness

This test method involves the determination of critical crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) values ​​at one or more of several crack extension events and can be used to measure crack initiation toughness for materials that vary from ductile to brittle behavior.

This test method is especially applicable to notched specimens sharpened by fatigue cracking. Recommended samples are three-point bend [SE(B)], compact [C(T)] or arc-shaped bend [A(B)]. The loading speed is slow and environmental effects (other than temperature) are not covered. Samples are tested under crosshead or clip gauge displacement controlled loading.

For samples SE(B) and C(T), the recommended sample thickness, B, is that of the material at thicknesses for an application. The recommended depth for sample A(B), W is the wall thickness of the tube or pipe from which the sample was taken. Superficial surface treatment can be used if desired.
