ASTM E1317 Standard Test Method for Flammability of Marine Surface Treatments

This fire test-response standard describes a procedure for measuring fire characteristics associated with the flammable behavior of surface finishes used on non-combustible substrates on board. These include, in particular, surface finishes intended for use in shipbuilding, such as deck linings, bulkhead and ceiling linings, adhesives used to fasten linings to bulkheads and ceilings, paints, and exposed treatment of insulating materials.

Tests performed according to this standard are intended to obtain fire characteristics that, when properly interpreted, can be used to select materials and surface treatments that will limit the rapid growth and spread of fire.

This standard requires a specific sample radiant thermal exposure range to measure fire characteristics.

Fire testing is inherently dangerous. Adequate safety precautions are taken for personnel and property while these tests are being carried out.

This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself cover all the factors necessary for a fire hazard or fire risk assessment of materials, products or assemblies.
