ASTM C42 Standard Test Method for Drilled Cores and Cut Concrete Beams

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM C42 testing. This test method involves obtaining, preparing and testing drilled cores from concrete for determinations of length or compressive strength or splitting tensile strength. This test method is not applicable to shotcrete cores.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. Values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system will be used independently of each other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.

This standard does not purport to address, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

The text of this standard refers to notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes will not be accepted as a requirement of the standard.

This test method provides standardized procedures for taking and testing samples to determine the compressive, shear stress and flexural strength of concrete in situ.

Generally, test specimens are obtained when there is doubt about the quality of concrete in situ due to low strength test results during construction or signs of structural deterioration. Another use of this method is to provide strength information about older structures.

Concrete strength is affected by the concrete's position in a structural member, with the concrete below tending to be stronger than the concrete above. Core strength is also affected by core orientation with respect to the horizontal plane of the concrete as it is placed, and strength tends to be lower when measured parallel to the horizontal plane. These factors will be taken into account when planning the locations where the concrete samples will be taken and when comparing the strength test results.
