It is intended to be used to measure the smoke generating properties of plastics under controlled combustion or decomposition conditions. Correlation with other fire conditions is not implied. Measurements are made for loss of light transmission through a volume of collected smoke produced under controlled, standardized conditions. The device is made in such a way that flame and smoke can be seen during the test.
