ASTM D5887 Test Method for Measurement of Index Flux in Saturated Geosynthetic Clay Lining Samples Using Flexible Wall Permeability

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D5887 standard. The ASTM D5887 standard covers an index test involving laboratory measurement of flux through samples of saturated geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) using a flexible wall permeability. This test method is applicable to GCL products with geotextile backing. It does not apply to GCL products with geomembrane backings, geofilm backings or polymer coating backings.

ASTM D5887 Test Method for Measurement of Index Flux in Saturated Geosynthetic Clay Lining Samples Using Flexible Wall Permeability

This test method yields water flow through a consolidated, hydrated and permeated saturated GCL sample under a predetermined set of conditions. This test method can be performed to determine if the flow of a GCL sample exceeds the maximum value specified by the manufacturer.

This test method can be used to determine the change in flux in a GCL sample by testing a number of different samples. This test method does not provide a flux value to be used directly in design calculations.

The flux for operating conditions depends on a number of factors such as the limiting pressure, type of hydration fluid, degree of hydration, degree of saturation, type of penetrating fluid and hydraulic gradient. The correlation between the flux values obtained with this test method and the flux through GCLs subjected to service conditions has not been fully investigated.

This test method does not provide a hydraulic conductivity value. Although the hydraulic conductivity can be determined in a similar way to the method described in this test method, the thickness of the sample is needed to calculate the hydraulic conductivity. This test method does not include procedures for measuring the thickness of the GCL or the clay component within the GCL.

The apparatus used in this test method is commonly used to determine the hydraulic conductivity of soil samples. However, the flux values measured in this test are typically much lower than those commonly measured for most natural soils. It is essential that the leakage rate of the apparatus used in this experiment is less than 10% of the flux.

This test method provides a flux measurement under a predetermined set of conditions that can be used for production quality control. The test method can also be used to check compliance. The flux value determined using this test method is not considered to represent the in-service flux of GCLs.

Values stated in SI units will be considered standard unless other units are specifically specified.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
