The ASTM F2879 standard applies to 6 mm airsoft projectiles and eye protection devices (EPDs) designed for use by participants in the sport of airsoft. These EPDs are designed to minimize or significantly reduce injury to the eye and adnexa from the impact and puncture of airsoft bullets.
When airsoft guns are used for target practice with a paper or gel target and a sufficient backstop to prevent rebound, shooters may wear eye protection (fire goggles) suitable for use with firearms, artillery (BB) guns, or air guns meeting ANSI. Z87.1. The balance of this specification applies to EPDs designed for use by participants in tactical sports using airsoft guns.
EPDs that meet the requirements of this specification provide protection for the eyes and adnexa, not other parts of the head. This specification does not limit the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses when used with EPD based on information provided by the manufacturer.
