ASTM E1333 Standard Test for Determining Airborne Formaldehyde Concentrations and Emission Rates from Wood Products Using a Hopper

EUROLAB, together with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM E1333 testing. This test method measures the airborne formaldehyde concentration and emission rate from wood products containing formaldehyde under conditions designed to simulate product use.

Concentration and emission rate in air are determined in a large room under certain temperature and relative humidity test conditions. General procedures are also for testing product combinations at product loading rates and typical indoor air change rates. Tested products, loading rates and used air exchange rates are described in the test report.

This test method determines the average concentration of formaldehyde in the air and the emission rate from a large number of oversized samples. The reported average concentration and emission rate will therefore not provide information on panels with higher or lower emissions in the test lot.

This method is mainly used for testing newly manufactured panel products that are sent for testing either wrapped in polyethylene or in waste sheets or both. When this test method is used to evaluate other than newly manufactured panel products (after original application, installation or use), the packaging and shipping method of the product for testing should be described in the test report.

The amount of formaldehyde in the air sample taken from the chamber is determined by an adaptation of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chromotropic acid test procedure. If another analytical procedure is used to determine the amount of formaldehyde in the air sample, this procedure should yield results with accuracy and sensitivity equivalent to or greater than the adapted chromotropic acid procedure.

This test method is not designed to determine general organic emissions from all indoor materials and products.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
