ASTM E136 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Flammability of Materials Using a 750°C Vertical Tube Furnace

ASTM E136 standard, fire test-response test method covers the determination of flammability of building materials under specified laboratory conditions. Materials that pass this test are typically classified as non-combustible materials.

ASTM E136 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Flammability of Materials Using a 750°C Vertical Tube Furnace

This test method is not applicable to laminated or coated materials. This test method is not suitable or satisfactory for materials that soften, flow, melt, intumescent or otherwise separate the measuring thermocouple.

This test method does not provide a measure of an intrinsic property. This test method does not provide a quantitative measure of heat generation or flammability; it only serves as a test method with selected (endpoint) flammability measures. The test method does not measure the self-heating tendencies of materials.

In this test method, materials are not tested in the form and quality used in building applications. The test sample consists of a small specified volume cut from a thick sheet, assembled from multiple thicknesses of thin sheets, or placed in a container if it consists of granular powder or loose fibrous materials.

Results from this test method apply to specific testers and test conditions and are likely to change when one or more of the following changes:

  • The size of the sample,
  • shape and layout,
  • Distribution of organic content,
  • exposure temperature,
  • air source,
  • The location of the thermocouple.

This test method includes two options, both using an oven to expose test samples of building materials to temperatures of 750°C (1382°F):

  • The apparatus furnace for Option A consists of a ceramic tube containing an electric heating coil and two concentric vertical refractory tubes.
  • The apparatus furnace for Option B (Test Method E2652) consists of a cone-shaped airflow stabilizer and a closed refractory tube surrounded by a heating coil.

This test method refers to notes and footnotes that provide explanatory information. Except for those in the tables and figures, these notes and footnotes will not be considered requirements of this test method. Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for information only.

This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not alone include all the factors necessary for a fire hazard or fire risk assessment of materials, products or assemblies under actual fire conditions.

Our organization also provides testing services to businesses within the scope of the Standard Test Method for Evaluating the Flammability of Materials Using 750°C Vertical Tube Furnace, within the framework of laboratory testing services.
