The ASTM E1590 standard provides a means to determine the combustion behavior of mattresses used in public places by measuring specific fire test responses when the test sample, mattress, or foundation mattress is exposed to a particular source of ignition under well-ventilated conditions. This is a fire-test-response standard.
This is a test method for mattresses or foundation mattresses. Following the application of a specific ignition source, test data are obtained that describe combustion behavior from ignition until all combustion is complete, a period of 1 hour has elapsed, or flashing appears unavoidable.
This test method does not provide information on the fire performance of mattresses under fire conditions other than those specified in this test method. In particular, this test method is not applicable to smoldering ignition of cigarettes. The heat release rate of the burning test sample is measured by an oxygen consumption method.
Other measurements are the production of light-blocking smoke and the concentrations of certain types of toxic gases in the combustion gases. Combustion behavior is visually documented with photographs or video recordings.

This standard is used to measure and describe the reaction of materials, products or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself cover all the factors necessary for a fire hazard or fire risk assessment.
