This standard provides the requirements and procedures for performing Rockwell hardness tests for Rockwell hardness machines.
Units, when the Rockwell hardness test was developed, force levels were specified in kilogram-force (kgf) units and indenter ball diameters in inches (inch). This standard specifies units of force and length in the International System of Units (SI). However, due to historical precedent and continued widespread use, force values in kgf units and ball diameters in inch units are provided for information, and much of the discussion in this standard refers to these units.
The test principles, test procedures, and verification procedures are basically the same for both Rockwell and Rockwell surface hardness tests. The key difference between the two tests is that the test forces are smaller for the Rockwell surface test than for the Rockwell test. Depending on the scale used, indentations of the same type and size may be used for both tests. Accordingly, throughout this standard the term Rockwell will mean both Rockwell and Rockwell are superficial unless otherwise stated.
