ASTM E1980 Standard Practice for Calculating the Solar Reflectance Index of Horizontal and Low-Slope Opaque Surfaces

The ASTM D1980 standard covers the calculation of the Sun Reflectance Index (SRI) of horizontal and low slope opaque surfaces under standard conditions. The method aims to calculate SRI for surfaces with emissions greater than 0,1.

ASTM E1980 Standard Practice for Calculating the Solar Reflectance Index of Horizontal and Low-Slope Opaque Surfaces

Solar reflectance and thermal emission are important factors affecting surface and near-surface ambient air temperature. Surfaces with low solar reflectance absorb a high proportion of incoming solar energy. Some of this absorbed energy is transmitted to the ground and buildings, some to the air (leading to higher air temperatures) and some to the sky.

For equivalent conditions, the lower the emission of a surface, the higher the steady-state temperature. Low-emission surfaces cannot diffuse effectively into the sky and therefore become hot.

Determining solar reflectance and thermal dissipation, and then calculating the relative temperature of surfaces against the black and white reference temperature (defined as the Solar Reflectance Index, SRI) can help designers and consumers select suitable materials to make their buildings and communities energy efficient. The method described here gives the SRI of surfaces based on the measured solar reflections and the thermal properties of the surfaces.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard is not meant to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to determine appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
