EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D94 standard. These test methods cover the determination of the amount of components that will saponify under the following conditions, such as lubricants, additives and transmission fluids in petroleum products.
Since the compounds of sulfur, phosphorus, halogens and some other elements, which are sometimes added to petroleum products, also consume alkalis and acids, the results obtained show the effect of these foreign substances in addition to the saponifiable matter.
Results on products containing such materials, used internal combustion engine crankcase oils and used turbine oils should be interpreted with caution.
The above-mentioned materials that are not normally considered saponifiable include inorganic or certain organic acids, most non-alkaline soaps, and the like. The presence of such materials increases the saponification number more than that of oily saponifiable materials for which the test method is primarily intended.
The smell of hydrogen sulfide near the end of the back titration in the saponification test is an indication that certain types of reactive sulfur compounds are present in the sample. In the case of other reactive sulfur, chlorine and phosphorus compounds and other interfering substances, no simple indication is given during the test. The gravimetric determination of the actual amount of fatty acids is probably the most reliable method for such compounds.
