ASTM E290 Standard Test Methods for Flexural Testing of Material for Ductility

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM E290 testing. These test methods cover the bending test for the ductility of materials.

ASTM E290 Standard Test Methods for Flexural Testing of Material for Ductility

Procedures include four restriction conditions on the bent portion of the sample:

  • Guided bending test, which uses a mandrel or piston of specified size to force the mid-length of the sample between two supports separated by a defined gap;
  • A semi-guided bend test in which the specimen is bent at a certain angle or up to a certain internal radius of curvature (r) while in contact with a mandrel and is measured while under bending force;
  • A free bending test in which the ends of the sample are brought towards each other, but no transverse force is applied to the elbow itself and the concave inner surface of the elbow is not in contact with other material;
  • Bending and straightening test.

After bending, the convex surface of the bend is inspected for a crack or surface irregularities. If the sample is broken, the material has failed the test. When complete breakage does not occur, the failure criterion is the number and size of cracks or surface irregularities visible to the naked eye that occur on the convex surface of the specimen after bending, as specified in the product standard.

Any crack within one thickness of the edge of the specimen is not considered a flexural test failure. Cracks occurring at the corners of the bent part shall not be considered significant unless they exceed the size specified for corner cracks in the product standard.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. The inch-pound values in parentheses were used to establish the test parameters and are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
