The purpose of ASTM F2096 is to detect gross leaks in tray and pouch packages. These packs will be placed under water and inflated to a certain pressure. When this pressure is reached, it will be observed for a constant bubble flow indicating that the pack is defective.
The determined pressure will be determined before the test and the pressure must be repeatable for multiple accurate tests. The pressure should not be too high, not a rupture or too low. It is recommended to use a drain control valve to help balance the pressure. There are two different test methods depending on whether the package is porous or non-porous.
This test method allows users to inspect packages for gross leaks. The internal pressure test is used to evaluate package integrity. Package integrity will benefit the consumer because they can safely receive packages that are sterile or intended to avoid contamination by heat seal.
The number of test samples required for this test is the number that will provide sufficient performance representation. No conditioning is required for this test procedure.
Place the air supply and pressure monitor through the hole in the package. Close the hole with minimum air leakage. Then, immerse the pack in water and begin to inflate the pack. The package should remain at least 1 inch underwater. In most cases, it is helpful to use some device or fixture to maintain the desired depth of the package throughout the test. Slowly inflate the pack and check for a bubble stream coming out of the pack. Repeat the test on the opposite side of the package.

Then immerse the pack in at least 1 inch of water and hold it for at least 5 seconds. This will allow the porous package to be adjusted. Then start to inflate the pack. The package should remain at least 1 inch underwater. In most cases, it is useful to use some device or fixture to maintain the desired depth of the package throughout the test. Slowly inflate the pack and check for a bubble stream coming out of the pack. Repeat the test on the opposite side of the package.
