This standard covers force verification procedures for static or quasi-static testing machines through force measurement standards for tension or compression, or both.
These applications are not intended to be exact purchasing specifications for test machines. Test machines can be verified by one of the following three methods or a combination thereof. Each of the methods requires a certain measurement uncertainty that demonstrates metrological traceability to the International System of Units (SI).

The term 'metrological traceability' is used as defined in JCGM 200: International glossary of metrology-Basic and general concepts and related terms (VIM).
Units - Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure compliance with the standard, each system should be used independently of the other and the values obtained from the two systems should not be combined.
Other conventional force units such as the kilogram-force (kgf) often used in hardness testing machines can be used with this standard.
The requirements of these applications limit the main components of measurement uncertainty during validation of test machines. These Standard Practices do not require that the allowable error be reduced by the amount of measurement uncertainty encountered during a verification. As a result, a test machine validated using these applications can produce a deviation of greater than ±1.0% from the true force when the error is combined with the measurement uncertainty.
