ASTM E45 Standard Test Method for Determining the Inclusion Content of Steel

Macroscopic methods include macro-abrasion, breakage, drop and magnetic particle testing. Microscopic methods include five generally accepted inspection systems.

In these microscopic methods, inclusions are assigned to a category based on similarities in morphology and not on their chemical identity. Metallographic techniques that allow a simple distinction between morphologically similar inclusions are briefly discussed. Although the methods are primarily aimed at grading additives, components such as carbides, nitrides, carbonitrids, borides, and intermetallic phases can be graded using some microscopic methods.

In some cases, alloys other than steel may be graded using one or more of these methods; methods will be explained in terms of their use on steels. Depending on the type of steel and the required properties, a macroscopic or microscopic method, or a combination of the two, may be found most satisfactory for determining the inclusion content.

These test methods relate only to the recommended test methods and nothing in them should be construed as defining or determining the acceptability limits for any steel grade.
