ASTM E466 Standard Practice for Conducting Force-Controlled Constant Amplitude Axial Fatigue Tests of Metallic Materials

The ASTM E466 test covers the procedure for the performance of axial force-controlled fatigue tests to obtain the fatigue strength of metallic materials both at initial loading and in the fatigue regime where the deformations are predominantly elastic throughout the test.

This application is limited to fatigue testing of axial unnotched and notched specimens subjected to a constant amplitude, periodic stress in air at room temperature. This application is not intended for axial fatigue testing of components or parts.

ASTM E466 Test Procedure

The sample is securely placed in the handles of the testing machine. Samples can be round or flat. Care is taken to arrange the sample symmetrically to distribute the load evenly over the cross section. This avoids complications that hinder the assessment of the actual strength of the material.

Care should be taken to properly align the sample. See ASTM E0 for machine travel speed (100-466 Hz). The machine is started. It continues in sinusoidal loops until failure. The load at the time of failure is recorded.

Following this standard, the effect of changes in material, geometry, surface condition, and stress on the fatigue resistance of metallic materials subjected to direct stress for multiple cycles is investigated. The results are only suitable for application to the design when the sample test conditions realistically simulate the service conditions.
