ASTM E647 Standard Test Method for Measuring Fatigue Crack Growth Rates

Several different test procedures are provided, the optimum test procedure primarily depends on the magnitude of the fatigue crack growth rate to be measured.

The materials that can be tested with this test method are not limited in thickness or strength as long as the specimens have sufficient thickness to prevent buckling and sufficient planar dimension to remain predominantly elastic during testing.

A range of sample sizes with proportional planar dimensions are provided, but the size is variable to be adjusted for yield strength and applied force. The sample thickness can vary independently of the planar dimension.

Specimen configurations different from those included in this method may be used, provided well-constructed stress-intensity factor calibrations are available and the specimens are of sufficient planar size to remain predominantly elastic during testing.
