ASTM E72 Standard Test Methods for Strength Testing of Panels for Building Construction

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM E72 standard. The ASTM E72 standard covers test samples, loading, deformation measurements, reports, and precision-accuracy procedures for determining the structural properties of sections of wall, floor, and roof structures.

Test Walls

  • Importance and use
  • pressure load
  • tensile load
  • Transverse load - when the specimen is horizontal
  • Transverse load - when the specimen is vertical
  • concentrated load
  • impact load
  • rack load

The procedures described are those that will test the behavior of sections of wall construction under conditions representative of those encountered in service. Performance criteria based on data from these procedures can ensure structural adequacy and service life.

Measure the deformations with sufficient accuracy and report to a minimum of 0,25 mm (0,01 inch) to define the load-deformation relationship. The specified strain measurement apparatus for any load may be replaced by another apparatus provided it allows strain readings equivalent in accuracy to those taken from the specified apparatus.

Load should be applied to all specimens in any test in selected increments such that a sufficient number of readings are obtained to accurately determine the load-strain curve. With no load on the specimen or under a small initial load, the initial reading of the load and the deformation reading are recorded. The load is increased to the first increase and the deformation is recorded.

Unless otherwise stated, reduce the load to the first load and save the set (sometimes called a "permanent set"). Increase the load in two increments and save them when released to the first load. Three, four, etc. Follow this reading order. When the low load behavior of the sample for each sample indicates that the sample may suddenly fail and damage the deformation measuring apparatus, this apparatus is removed from the sample and the load is increased. This cycle continues continuously until the maximum load that can be applied to the sample is determined.

Except for rack tests, the load level should be kept as constant as possible for a period of 5 minutes after each load increase has been applied. Deformation readings are taken as soon as possible after load application, after 5 minutes under constant load, immediately after any partial or full load release, and after 5 minutes. Initial and 5-minute readings should be plotted as load deformation curves.

Full load deformation time records should be maintained throughout the test. If a specific load has to be applied for a certain period of time, such as 24 hours, strain readings should be taken initially, at intervals throughout that period, and at the end of that period to ensure a satisfactory plot of a time-strain curve for the entire period.

Values stated in inch-pound units should be considered standard. Values in parentheses are mathematical conversions to non-standard SI units, provided for informational purposes only.
