It specifically relates to testing under ever-increasing force and excludes cyclic and continuous loading. The determined amount is the residual strength of a sample with a semi-elliptical or circular segmental fatigue crack on one surface. This value depends on the properties of the material as well as the crack dimensions and sample thickness.
The metallic materials that can be tested are not limited by strength, thickness, or toughness. However, testing thick samples of rigid materials may require an extremely high-capacity tensile testing machine. The applicability of this application to non-metallic materials has not been determined.
This application is limited to specimens with a regular rectangular cross-section in the test section. The test section width and length should be large relative to the crack length. The crack depth and length should be chosen in accordance with the ultimate purpose of the test.
Residual strength can be highly dependent on temperature in a certain range depending on the properties of the material. This application is suitable for tests at any suitable temperature.
Residual strength is believed to be relatively insensitive to loading rate within the range normally used in conventional tensile testing. When very low or very high upload rates are expected in the service, the effect of upload speed should be investigated using special procedures outside the scope of this application.
Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.
