The ASTM E831 test determines the technical coefficient of linear thermal expansion of solid materials using thermomechanical analysis techniques. This test method is applicable to solid materials that exhibit sufficient hardness over the test temperature range so that the sensing probe does not indent the sample.
Linear coefficients of thermal expansion are used, for example, for design purposes and to determine whether failure will occur due to thermal stress when a solid body made of two different materials is subjected to temperature changes.
This test method is comparable to Test Method D3386 for testing electrical insulating materials, but covers a more general group of solid materials and defines test conditions more specifically. This test method uses a smaller sample and a significantly different apparatus than Test Methods E228 and D696.
Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. This test method can be used in research, specification acceptance, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance.
The recommended lower limit of the linear thermal expansion coefficient measured with this test method is 5 μm/(m·°C). The test method can be used at lower (or negative) expansion levels with reduced accuracy and precision.
This test method is applicable to the temperature range from -120 °C to 900 °C. The temperature range can be extended depending on the instrumentation and calibration materials used.
