ASTM E903 Test Standard for Peel or Peel Strength of Adhesive Bonds

The ASTM E903 standard is a common tensile test used to evaluate the peel or peel properties of adhesive bonded materials used in a wide variety of applications across an even wider range of industries.

Examples of materials tested to ASTM D903 are plastic films, adhesive labels, and waterproofing materials. This guide is designed to introduce you to the basics of an ASTM D903 test and will provide an overview of required testing equipment, software, and samples. However, anyone planning to test ASTM D903 should not consider this guide an adequate alternative to reading the full standard.

Testing for ASTM D903 is primarily performed for research and development purposes. This method is difficult to use as a quality control measure because of the standard 7-day conditioning time required by this test. In most cases, the ASTM D903 test is used to evaluate an isolated chemical composition for adhesives that give the best adhesive properties.

To perform a test to ASTM D903, adhesive materials must be cut into 1" x 12" long samples. The samples are then removed from a flexible or rigid substrate at a 152,4° angle at a separation speed of 6 mm/min or 180in/min. Test materials should be thick enough to withstand the expected tensile pull, but not more than 3 mm (1φ 8 in.) thick. Where possible, standard thickness of samples: metals, 1,6 mm (1/16 in.); plastic, 1/16 in; wood, 1/8 in; rubber compounds, 1,9 mm (0,075in.). If the flexible specimen is known to stretch under load, it is important to use a harder substrate that is not expected to stretch under the same load.

All samples will need to be conditioned prior to testing. Standard conditioning for ASTM D903 requires exposure of the sample to monitored humidity and temperature for 7 days. For some adhesives, the conditioning time may be less, which is considered unnecessary for this material. It is the completion of the tests as soon as possible after the sample leaves the conditioning environment.

This Standard is not intended to address all security concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this Standard to determine appropriate safety and health practices prior to use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.
