ASTM E970 Standard Test Method for Critical Radiant Flux of Exposed Attic Insulation Using a Radiant Heat Energy Source

This fire-test-response standard describes a procedure for measuring the critical radiant flux of exposed attic insulation exposed to a flaming ignition source in a cascaded radiant heat energy environment in a test chamber. A sample is any loft insulation. This test method cannot be applied to insulations that melt or shrink when exposed to a radiant heat energy environment or pilot burner.

This fire-test-response standard measures the critical radiant flux at the point where the flame travels furthest. It provides a basis for predicting one aspect of fire exposure behavior for exposed attic insulation. The applied radiant flux simulates the levels of thermal radiation likely to strike the floors of attic floors, the upper surfaces of which are heated by the sun by flames from the roof or an incidental fire in the attic. This fire-test-response standard was developed to simulate an important fire exposure component of fires that develop in attic floors, but is not intended to be used to predict the flame propagation behavior of insulation installed outside the attic.
