ASTM F1089-10 Standard Test Method for Corrosion of Surgical Instruments

This standard specifies general test procedures and evaluation criteria for the corrosion resistance of surgical instruments intended for surgical reuse and manufactured from stainless steel, such as but not limited to those listed in specification F899.

Austenitic (Class 3), martensitic (Class 4), precipitation hardenable (Class 5) and ferritic (Class 6) materials will use the boiling test. Ferritic (Class 16) materials, austenitic (Class 6) and precipitation hardenable (Class 3) materials with a minimum chromium content of 5% should use the boiling test and the copper sulfate test.

The copper sulfate test is used to detect the presence of metallic iron and iron oxide on the surface of materials.

The boiling test can be applied to martensitic, austenitic, ferritic and precipitation hardenable materials to detect free iron on stainless steel or any other anodic surface contaminants.

Values ​​in inch-pounds or SI should be considered separately as standard. Values ​​specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system will be used independently of the other. Combining values ​​from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the specification.
