The ASTM F1868 test covers the measurement of the thermal resistance and evaporation resistance of fabrics, films, coatings, foams and leathers under steady state conditions, including multilayer assemblies for use in clothing systems.
The range of this measurement technique for intrinsic thermal resistance is 0,002 to 0,5 K · m 2 /W and for internal evaporation resistance 0,0 to 1,0 kPa · m 2 /W. Values in SI units will be accepted as standard.
The method correlates well with various studies of workers (especially firefighters) to combat the effects of over-exertion, heat stress and other human factor effects while working. For firefighters, overexertion/stress/medical is still the #1 cause of death in the field.
