ASTM F1875-98 Standard Practice for Friction Corrosion Testing of Modular Implant Interfaces: Hip Femur Head-Capture and Tapered Conical Interface

This standard describes testing, analytical and characterization methods for evaluating the mechanical stability of the hole and cone interface of the head and stem connection of modular hip implants subjected to cyclic loading, by means of fretting corrosion measurements.

ASTM F1875-98 Standard Test Method

The primary purpose of this method is to provide a uniform set of guidelines for long-term testing to quantify damage by measuring the production of wear products and particulate debris from abrasion and fretting corrosion. Damage is also assessed by characterizing the damage to the hole and cone surfaces.

This method provides a short-term electrochemical assessment of erosive corrosion of the modular interface. The purpose of this method is not to produce damage or particulate residue, but rather to provide a rapid method for qualitative assessment of design changes that do not involve material changes.

This standard does not provide judgment or estimation of in-vivo implant performance, but rather provides a uniform set of guidelines for assessing relative performance differences between different implant designs, structures, or materials with performance defined in terms of quantity. In addition, this standard should allow direct comparison of abrasive corrosion data among independent research groups, thus enabling a database of modular implant performance to be established.

The general concepts and methodologies described in this standard can be applied to the study of other modular interfaces in total joint prostheses.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
