This specification covers the standard procedure and acceptance for straight beam, pulse echo, ultrasonic inspection of rolled fully quenched carbon and alloy steel sheets.
The equipment will be of pulse-echo straight beam type. Non-destructive testing of the material shall be performed in an area free of operations that interfere with the proper operation of the equipment. Ultrasonic examination will be performed on both main surfaces of the plate. The grid sweep will be continuous along vertical grid lines, or continuous along parallel paths transverse to the home plate axis, or continuous along parallel paths parallel to the home plate axis or parallel to smaller centres.
It has been developed to ensure that steel plates are delivered free of major internal discontinuities such as tubing, ruptures or laminations and will be used when the inquiry, contract, order or specification states that the plates will be subjected to ultrasonic inspection.
Values specified in inch-pound units or SI units will be considered individual standards. The values specified in each system are not exactly equivalent, so each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from two systems may result in non-compliance with the specification.
This international standard has been developed in accordance with internationally accepted principles on standardization set out in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations published by the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee of the World Trade Organization.
