ASTM D4985 Standard Test for Low Silicate Ethylene Glycol Based Engine Coolant for Heavy Duty Engines Requiring Precharge of Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA)

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D4985 standard. This standard covers requirements for low silicate ethylene glycol-based engine coolants for cooling systems of heavy-duty engines.

ASTM D4985 Standard Test for Low Silicate Ethylene Glycol Based Engine Coolant for Heavy Duty Engines Requiring Precharge of Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA)

When concentrates are used in water at a concentration of 40 to 60% by volume, or when pre-diluted glycol-based engine coolants (minimum 50% by volume) are used without further dilution, they will function effectively as corrosion protection, freeze protection to at least -36.4. °C (−33.5°F) and boils to at least 108°C (226°F).

This standard is based on information on the performance of engine coolants prepared from new or virgin components. A separate specification (Specification D6210) exists for heavy-duty engine coolants that can be prepared from recycled or reprocessed used coolant or reprocessed industrially sourced ethylene glycol.

Coolants that meet this standard require an initial charge of an additional coolant additive (SCA) and require regular maintenance doses of a SCA to maintain protection in certain operating heavy-duty engine cooling systems, particularly in-block wet cylinder liner design. . SCA additions are defined by the engine manufacturer or vehicle manufacturer and are their primary responsibility. If not instructed, follow the SCA supplier's recommended instructions.

Values given in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

This international standard has been developed in accordance with the internationally accepted principles of standardization set out in the Principles decision on the development of international standards, guidelines and recommendations published by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
