This standard provides information to help engineers select suitable non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for characterizing aerospace polymer matrix composites (PMCs).
This standard is not intended to describe every control technology. Emphasis is placed instead on established NDT methods developed according to consensus standards and currently used by industry. Standard practices and test methods are not described in detail, but are referenced. Referenced NDT practices and testing methods have shown PMCs useful in quality assurance during process design and optimization, process control, post-production inspection, in-service inspection, and health monitoring.
This standard does not specify accept-reject criteria and is not intended to be used as a tool to approve composite materials or components for service.
This standard outlines the application of NDT procedures to fiber and fabric reinforced polymeric matrix composites. Composites of interest are those containing primarily, but not limited to, high modulus fibers. Also, emphasis is placed on continuous (versus discontinuous) fiber-reinforced composites.
Composite materials discussed herein include uniaxial sheets, cross-ply laminates, angled-ply laminates, and sandwich structures. Composite components made from these include filament-wrapped pressure vessels, flight control surfaces, and various structural composites.
