ASTM C1341 Standard Test Method for Flexural Properties of Continuous Fiber Reinforced Advanced Ceramic Composites

This test method covers the determination of the flexural properties of continuous fiber-reinforced ceramic composites in the form of rectangular bars formed directly or cut from sheets, plates or molded shapes.

The three test geometries are described below:

• Test Geometry I, A three-point loading system using center point force application on a simply supported beam;
• Test Geometry IIA, A four-point loading system using two force application points equally spaced from adjacent points of support, with half the span of support between points of force application;
• Test Geometry IIB, A four-point loading system using two force-applied points equally spaced from adjacent fulcrum points, the distance between the force-applying points being one-third of the support span.

This test method is primarily applicable to all advanced ceramic matrix composites with continuous fiber reinforcement: unidirectional (1D), bidirectional (2D), tridirectional (3D), and other continuous fiber architectures. In addition, this test method can be used with continuous fiber reinforced glass (amorphous) matrix composites. However, flexural strength cannot be determined for materials that do not break or deteriorate by tension or compression in the outer fibers.
