ASTM C1371 Standard Test Method for Detecting the Emission of Near Room Temperature Materials Using Portable Emissometers

The ASTM C1371 standard covers the technique of determining the emission of opaque and highly thermally conductive materials using a portable differential thermopile emissometer. The purpose of the test method is to provide a comparative tool for measuring the diffusion of materials near room temperature.

ASTM C1371 Standard Test Method for Detecting the Emission of Near Room Temperature Materials Using Portable Emissometers

If the surface of a material has a low emissivity, heat transfer from the surface is reduced by radiation transfer. Since the controlling factor in the use of insulation is sometimes condensation control or personnel protection, it is important to understand that a low diffusion will change the surface temperature of a material. One possible criterion in the selection of these materials is the question of the effect of aging on surface dispersion. If a material's initial low surface spread is not maintained during service, the material's long-term value is reduced.

This test method provides a means for comparative periodic testing of low emissivity surfaces in the field. In this way, the effects of aging on reflective properties can be monitored.

This test method determines the total hemispherical scatter with an accuracy of better than ±0,02 units. The spreads of the calibration standards should have been derived from accurate independent measurements of the total hemisphere spread. This test method should not be used for specimens that are highly anisotropic or transparent to infrared radiation. This test method should also not be used for samples with significant thermal resistance.

This test method does not support Test Method C835, which is an absolute method for determining total hemispherical dispersion, or Test Method E408, which includes two comparative methods for detecting total normal dispersion. Due to the unique construction of the portable emissometer, it can be calibrated to measure the total hemisphere emissivity. This is supported by comparison of the emissometer measurements with the C835 2 Test Method.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard is not meant to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to determine appropriate safety and health practices prior to use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.

Our organization also provides testing services to businesses within the framework of laboratory testing services, within the scope of the Standard Test Method for Determining the Emission of Materials Close to Room Temperature Using ASTM C1371 Portable Emissometers.
