ASTM F2118 Fatigue Test Method for Acrylic Bone Cement

The ASTM F2118 test describes test procedures for evaluating the constant amplitude, uniaxial, stress-compression fatigue performance of acrylic bone cement materials. Smooth cylindrical reduced gauge cross section test specimens are fabricated from acrylic bone cement and mounted on a uniaxial fatigue frame.

ASTM F2118 Fatigue Test Method for Acrylic Bone Cement

The sample is subjected to fully reversed tensile and compression loading in a sinusoidal cyclic fashion at a certain frequency in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Fatigue loading continues until the sample fails or a predetermined number of cycles is reached. ASTM F2118 describes a uniaxial, constant amplitude, fully inverted fatigue test for characterizing the fatigue performance of a given uniform cylindrical specimen produced from acrylic bone cement.

Mount the samples and grip the sample firmly at both ends. Ensure that the longitudinal centerline of the test specimens is aligned with the test machine loading axis so that no bending moment is applied to the specimens. Mount a media chamber on the load frame and fill it with fresh test solution immediately after the specimen is mounted to prevent the specimen from drying out.

The chamber must be filled so that the entire sample is immersed. Distilled water will be added to the test chamber during testing to compensate for the evaporation loss. The temperature controller must be programmed and activated to warm the test solution to 37 degrees C.

The purpose of this test method is not to describe the performance levels of these materials. The purpose of this test method is not to directly simulate the clinical use of these materials, but to allow comparison between acrylic bone cements to evaluate fatigue behavior under certain conditions.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
