This standard covers a procedure for determining the amount of coating applied to a substrate (e.g. film, paper, nonwoven). The amount of coating is expressed as weight per given area.
A coating is a coating applied to the surface of an object, often called a substrate. The purpose of applying the coating can be decorative, functional, or both. The coating itself may be an all-over coating that completely covers the substrate, or it may only cover parts of the substrate.
Functional coatings can be applied to modify the surface properties of the substrate, such as adhesion, wettability, corrosion resistance or abrasion resistance. In other cases, eg. Semiconductor device fabrication (where the substrate is a wafer) adds a completely new property such as coating, magnetic response or electrical conductivity, and forms an important part of the finished product.
Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.
