ASTM F2228 Standard Test Method for the Non-Destructive Detection of Leakages in Packages Containing Porous Barrier Material with CO Tracer Gas Method

This non-destructive testing method detects leaks in non-porous rigid thermoformed trays, as well as in the gasket between the porous lid and the tray. The test method detects duct leaks in packages as small as 100 µm (0,004 inch) diameter in the gasket, as well as pinholes with a diameter of 50 µm (0,002 inch) or cracks of equivalent size in the tray, depending on the concentration of trace gas in the container.

This test method does not claim to challenge the porous (breathable) cover material. Any defects in the porous part of the package will not be detected by this test method.
