Analysis of Total Isotopic Uranium and Total Thorium in Soils by ASTM C1345 Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM C1345 testing. This test method includes measuring the total uranium (U) and thorium (Th) concentrations in soils as well as determining the 234U, 235U, 236U and 238 isotope weight percentages.

The U thus allows calculation of individual isotopic uranium activity or total uranium activity. This inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) method is designed as an alternative analysis to methods such as alpha spectroscopy or thermal ionization mass spectroscopy (TIMS).

Furthermore, while this test method only covers the isotopes listed above, the instrumental technique can be extended to other long-lived radioisotopes as the preparation technique involves pre-concentration of actinide sequence elements.

The resulting sample volume can be further reduced for entry into the ICP-MS via an electrothermal evaporation (ETV) unit or other sample placement device, even if standard peristaltic pump entry is applied for this test method. Sample preparation removes organic matter and silica from the soil using a high-temperature furnace and hydrofluoric acid digestion. Therefore, this test method can allow for sample variability of both organic and silica content.

This test method is also described in ASTM STP 1291. Since this test method using quadrupole ICP-MS has been validated, advances have been made in ICP-MS technology in terms of collision or reaction handling as well as improved sensitivity and lower device background.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard.
