ASTM E1226 Standard Test Method for Explosibility of Dust Clouds

The purpose of this test method is to provide standardized test methods for characterizing the "explosiveness" of dust clouds in two ways; First, it determines whether a dust is "explosive", that is, whether a cloud of dust dispersed in the air has the ability to emit a flare.

Results obtained by applying the methods of this standard relate only to certain combustion properties of dispersed dust clouds. No conclusions should be drawn from such conclusions regarding the combustion properties of powders in other forms or conditions (e.g. ignition temperature of dust clouds or spark ignition energy, ignition properties of dust layers on hot surfaces, ignition of bulk dust in heated environments).

The results obtained by performing this test are intended to be used as elements of an explosion risk assessment that takes into account other relevant risk factors.
