It enables the determination of the oxygen gas transmission rate (O2 GTR), the permeability of the film to oxygen gas (PO2) and the oxygen permeability coefficient (P′O2). This test method does not claim to be the only method for measuring O 2 GTR. There may be other O 2 GTR determination methods using other oxygen sensors and procedures.

This test method has been deliberately prepared to allow the use of a variety of sensors, devices and procedures. The precision and bias of each design must be established individually to determine the applicability of that device or method to meet the user's needs.

O2 GTR is an important determinant of the packaging protection provided by barrier materials. However, it is not the only determinant and additional tests based on experience should be used to correlate packaging performance with O 2 GTR. It is suitable as a method of arbitration testing provided the buyer and seller agree on sampling procedures, standardization procedures, test conditions and acceptance criteria.

The Precision and Deviation section of this method shows results using a variety of instruments with non-coulometric and coulometric sensors. Values ​​stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
