This test method is not intended to cover precise physical procedures. The constant crosshead movement rate of this test lacks accuracy from a theoretical point of view. There can be a wide difference between the crosshead movement speed and the strain rate of the specimen; this indicates that the specified test rates may obscure the significant effects or properties of these materials in the plastic state. It has also been found that, as this test method allows, changes in the thickness of test specimens produce changes in the surface-to-volume ratio of such specimens and that these changes may affect the test results. Therefore, where directly comparable results are desired, all samples should be of equal thickness. Special additional tests should be used where more precise physical data are needed.
Test data obtained by this test method are and may be suitable for use in engineering design, taking into account test conditions compared to in-service conditions.
