ASTM F3004 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Seal Quality and Integrity Using Airborne Ultrasound

This standard method describes technology and test procedures that can be used to detect seal defects in the 1 mm size range and to characterize seal quality in various packaging styles using airborne ultrasound technology. This test method does not claim to be the only method for measuring gasket quality.

Thermal insulation materials and other package components can be tested in flexible, semi-rigid and rigid packages. In a recent ILS included in the method, precision and bias were evaluated only for flexible packaging seals. Precision and bias must be determined separately for any particular package.

Online, real-time inspection of seals can be considered, especially in L-Scan mode. This method provides a non-destructive, quantitative, non-subjective approach to flexible package seal inspection.
