ASTM C1303 Standard Test Method for Predicting Long-Term Thermal Resistance of Closed Cell Foam Insulation

This test method covers a procedure for estimating the long-term thermal resistance (LTTR) of uncoated or permeably coated solid gas-filled closed-cell foam insulations by reducing sample thickness to accelerate aging under controlled laboratory conditions (1-5).

Rigid gas-filled closed-cell foam insulation includes all cellular plastic insulations manufactured to retain a blowing agent other than air.

This test method is limited to homogeneous materials with an uncoated or permeable face. This method applies to a wide variety of rigid closed-cell foam insulation types, including but not limited to extruded polystyrene, polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, and phenolic. This test method does not apply to rigid closed-cell foams with impermeable faces or rigid closed-cell donut stock foams.

The test method is given in two parts. The Canonical Method in Part A provides long-term thermal resistance values ​​on a consistent basis that can be used for a variety of purposes, including product evaluation, specifications, or product comparisons. The Research Method in part B provides a general relationship between thermal conductivity, age and product thickness.

Values ​​stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values ​​specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values ​​from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.
