ASTM E1354 Oxygen Consumption Calorimeter Test for Heat and Visible Smoke Emission Rates

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM E1354 standard. This standard provides for measuring the response of materials exposed to controlled levels of radiant heating, with or without an external igniter.

ASTM E1354 Oxygen Consumption Calorimeter Test for Heat and Visible Smoke Emission Rates

This test method is used to determine the flammability, heat release rates, mass loss rates, effective heat of combustion and visible smoke development of materials and products.

The heat release rate is determined by measuring the oxygen consumption determined by the oxygen concentration and the flow rate in the exhaust product stream. The effective heat of combustion is determined from the simultaneous measurement of the sample mass loss rate together with the heat release rate. Smoke development is measured by dimming the light by the combustion product stream.

Samples will be subjected to initial test heat fluxes in the range of 0 to 100 kW/m2. External ignition when used will be by electric spark. The value of the initial test heat flux and the use of external ignition shall be as specified in the relevant material or performance standard. Normal specimen test orientation is horizontal regardless of whether the end-use application includes horizontal or vertical orientation. The device also includes provisions for portrait orientation testing; it is used for exploratory or diagnostic studies only.

This test method was developed for use in material and product evaluations, mathematical modelling, design purposes, or development and research. Examples of material samples include portions of an end-use product or various components used in the end-use product.

This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself cover all the factors necessary for a fire hazard or fire risk assessment of materials, products or assemblies. under real fire conditions.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
