The ASTM F739 standard describes specifications and test methods for the passage of liquids and gases through protective clothing materials under conditions of continuous contact. This test method measures the resistance of protective clothing materials to the permeability of liquid or gaseous chemicals under continuous contact.
The test method presented in this standard is designed to be used when the test chemical is a gas or liquid and that liquid is volatile or water-soluble or another liquid that does not interact with the garment material. The chemical gas or liquid described here is a chemical gas or liquid with a vapor pressure greater than 1 mm of mercury at 25 degree. One millimeter of mercury is the extra pressure created by a millimeter-high column of mercury.
Procedure A: For use when the test chemical is a volatile or water-soluble liquid.
Procedure B: For use when the test chemical is gas.
This test method is normally used to evaluate finished protective clothing or materials to be used for this purpose. Gloves, arm cuffs, aprons, clothes, hats, boots, respirators and similar items are expressed by the completed pieces of protective clothing. These materials are evaluated in terms of permeability detection time, standard transit time, permeability rate and cumulative permeability values.
This data is used to compare clothing materials in the clothing selection process to protect against hazardous chemicals. Long detection times, low cumulative permeability and low permeability rates are the main features sought.
This standard does not take into account safety concerns for use. It is the responsibility of the enterprise implementing this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices before use and to comply with the limits imposed by legal regulations.
The test method in the ASTM F739 standard is also a part of the ISO 6529 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
