ASTM G133 Standard Test Method for Linear Piston Top-on-Flat Slip Wear

The direction of relative motion between the slip surfaces periodically reverses so that the slip occurs back and forth and in a straight line. The main quantities of interest are the wear volumes of the contacting ball and flat sample materials; however, the coefficient of kinetic friction can also be measured using the method described.

This test method covers both oil-free and lubricated test procedures. The scope of this test method does not include testing in corrosive or chemically aggressive environments.

This test method includes two specimens, the flat specimen, and a specimen with a spherical tip (here referred to as a ball specimen) sliding against the flat specimen. These samples move relative to each other in a linear, reciprocating sliding motion under a predetermined set of conditions.

In this test method, the load is applied vertically downwards across the ball specimen against a horizontally mounted flat specimen. Normal load, stroke length, frequency and type of oscillation, test temperature, lubricant (if applicable), test time and atmospheric environment (including relative humidity range) are selected from one of two procedures. Constant velocity conditions are not maintained as this test method involves back and forth slip where changes in slip velocity and direction of motion occur during testing.
