This test method involves determining the potential expansion of cement-aggregate combinations by measuring the linear expansion developed by the combinations in mortar bars subjected to changes in temperature and water saturation during storage under prescribed test conditions.
Materials recommended to be used as fine aggregate in concrete will be processed as described in the preparation of aggregate with minimum crushing process. Materials proposed for use as coarse aggregate in concrete will be processed by crushing to produce as close as possible to a sampleable grade product. The sample shall have a gradation as specified in the preparation of aggregate section and shall represent the composition of the coarse aggregate recommended for use.
If there is reason to expect that the coarser sized particles of the crushed material will have a different composition from the finer sizes and if this difference can significantly affect the expansion due to reaction with alkalis, the coarser sizes shall be tested in the same manner as used in the test.
