This standard covers the measurement of the tear strength of textile fabrics by the tongue (single tear) procedure using a record constant-elongation-rate type (CRE) tensile testing machine.
The CRE type tensile tester has become the tester of choice for determining the tear strength of the tongue. It is recognized that some constant velocity type (CRT) tensile testing machines continue to be used. As a result, these testers can be used upon agreement between the buyer and supplier. Conditions of use of the CRT type tensile tester are given in Annex X1.
This test method applies to most fabrics, including woven fabrics, airbag fabrics, blankets, pile fabrics, knit fabrics, layered fabrics, pile fabrics, and non-woven fabrics. The fabrics may be untreated, substantially sized, coated, resin-treated or otherwise processed. Instructions are provided for testing samples with or without soaking.
The tear strength measured in this test method requires that tearing be initiated prior to testing. The reported value obtained is not directly related to the force required to initiate or initiate the tear.
Two calculations are provided for tongue tear strength: the single peak force and the average of the five highest peak forces.
