ASTM D642 is a test standard that covers compression tests on shipping containers such as cans, pails, and drums. The results from this test method can be used to evaluate the ability of shipping containers, components and unit loads to successfully recover from the compressive forces to which they are subjected during storage and distribution.
Shipping containers can be tested with or without content. Pressure resistance can be determined with fixed or rotating plate type testing machines. This test method relates to TAPPI T804, which is similar for stationary roller machines but does not recognize rotary roller machines.
Compressive strength is one of the characteristics used to evaluate the ability of shipping containers, their components, and unit loads to successfully recover from the compressive forces to which they are subjected during storage and distribution.
Pressure resistance can be determined with fixed or rotating plate type testing machines. However, a fixed-head compaction machine is required to perform end-to-end and corner-to-corner orientations on test specimens. Also, unit loads are usually only tested in top-down routing.
Fixed-plate machines often cause samples to break at their strongest points, while turn-plate machines cause samples to break at their weakest point as the rotating plate is allowed to move to the weakest point of the container.
