ASTM G124 Standard Test for Determining the Combustion Behavior of Metallic Materials in Oxygen-Enriched Atmospheres

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM G124 testing. The ASTM G124 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) defines test devices and test methods for determining the minimum test gas pressure and sample temperature that supports self-sustaining combustion, and the rate of regression of the melting surface of a standard metallic material sample fired using a promoter. .

The data obtained from this test method depends on the exact test specimen configuration and provides a basis for comparing the combustion properties of metallic materials. It sets no criteria for correlating these data for the appropriateness of a material's use in any real system.

Requirements for apparatus suitable for this test method are provided with an example. However, the use of this example is not mandatory. This test method is for gaseous oxygen or an inert diluent mixture with any oxygen at any pressure or temperature within the capabilities of the apparatus used.

The standard test method briefly described here allows comparison of the combustion properties of various metallic materials. The combustion characteristics considered are:

  • Burn and fireproof pressure
  • Combustion and non-burning temperature
  • Regression rate of the melting interface
  • Visual assessment of the combustion process of the test sample

An oxygen-enriched atmosphere is defined as any atmosphere where the oxygen concentration exceeds 21 percent by volume or the partial pressure of oxygen exceeds 160 millimeters of mercury, or both. The degree of fire hazard in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere varies with the available oxygen concentration, the diluent gas, and the total pressure. The most common risks in oxygen-enriched atmospheres are the risk of fire, with increased partial pressure of oxygen or the absence of the diluting effect of an inert gas. However, an oxygen-enriched atmosphere, by definition, does not pose an increased fire hazard. Certain oxygen-enriched atmospheres show similar combustion-supporting properties as ambient air.
