ASTM G21 Test Standard for Determining Fungal Resistance of Synthetic Polymeric Materials

ASTM G21 covers the determination of the effect of molds on the properties of synthetic polymeric materials in the form of molded and fabricated products, tubes, rods, sheets, and film materials. Changes in optical, mechanical and electrical properties can be determined by applicable ASTM methods.

ASTM G21 Test Applicability

Fungi are grown on solid media and a spore suspension is prepared from Penicillium, Aspergillus, Chaetomium, Trichoderma, Aureobasidium, a small volume of the pooled spore preparation is applied directly to the test specimens, the petri dishes are closed and incubated for up to 28 days, samples based on fungal growth after 28 days. A semi-quantitative performance score is awarded.

The ASTM G21 test method tests materials with a wide variety of fungal species, from common environmental fungi to agricultural pathogens and even fungi that produce antibacterial compounds, all with different growth requirements and enzymatic properties.
