ASTM G28 Standard Test Methods for the Determination of Susceptibility to Intergranular Corrosion in Forged, Nickel Rich, Chromium Bearing Alloys

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM G28 standard. ASTM G28 test methods A and B are used in many industries as quality control tests to evaluate the resistance of various stainless steels and nickel-based alloys such as Alloy 825 and Alloy 625 to intergranular corrosion.

Nickel alloys and stainless steels are called 'sensitized' when they exhibit grain boundary precipitation that is detrimental to intergranular corrosion resistance.

These test methods cover two tests as follows:

Method A, Ferric Sulphate-Sulfuric Acid Test: This test method describes the procedure for performing the boiling ferric sulfate 50% sulfuric acid test, which measures the susceptibility of some nickel-rich, chromium-containing alloys to intergranular corrosion that may be encountered. The uniform corrosion rate obtained with this test method, a function of minor variations in alloy composition, can easily mask the intergranular corrosion components of the overall corrosion rate on alloys N10276, N06022, N06059 and N06455.

Method B, Mixed Acid-Oxidizing Salt Test: This test method shows that some nickel-rich, chromium-containing alloys have a step function increase in corrosion rate when there is a high level of grain boundary precipitation.

The purpose of these two test methods is to detect susceptibility to intergranular corrosion, which is affected by changes in processing or composition, or both. Materials shown to be susceptible may or may not undergo intergranular corrosion in other environments. This should be created independently with certain tests or service experience.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
