ASTM G48 Standard Test Methods for Pitting and Crack Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steels and Related Alloys Using Iron Chloride Solution

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM G48 standard. These test methods cover pitting and crevice corrosion of stainless steels and related alloys when exposed to oxidizing chloride environments.

ASTM G48 Standard Test Methods for Pitting and Crack Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steels and Related Alloys Using Iron Chloride Solution

The following six procedures, methods A, B, C, D, E, and F, are defined:

  • Method A, Ferric chloride pit test.
  • Method B, Ferric chloride crack test.
  • Method C, Critical pitting temperature test for nickel-based and chromium-containing alloys.
  • Method D, Critical range temperature testing for nickel-based and chromium-containing alloys.
  • Method E, Critical pitting temperature test for stainless steels.
  • Method F, Critical range temperature testing for stainless steels.

While Method A is designed to determine the relative pitting resistance of stainless steels and nickel-based, chromium-containing alloys, Method B can be used to determine both the pitting and crevice corrosion resistance of these alloys. Methods C, D, E, and F allow sorting of alloys according to the minimum (critical) temperature to induce the initiation of pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion of stainless steels, nickel-based, and chromium-containing alloys, respectively, in a standard ferric chloride.

These tests can be used to determine the effects of alloy additives, heat treatment, and surface finishes on pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values given in parentheses after SI units are for information purposes only and are not considered standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
